Thanks to all the youth and adult advocates that made Arkansas Tobacco Free Kids Day 2014 a HUGE SUCCESS! You Rock!
ARKANSAS TOBACCO FREE KIDS DAY (KICK BUTTS DAY)
A big thanks to all the youth and youth sponsors who participated in Arkansas Tobacco Free Kids Day-ATFKD (Kick Butts Day 2014).
Your attendance and participation made this event a huge success. In fact, we BROKE RECORDS this year and we appreciate you for helping us SURPASS our goal of 100 youth to celebrate Arkansas Tobacco Free Kids Day.
This year we did things a little differently. A group of 12 youth and 6 adults traveled to two Little Rock Schools: Bale Elementary and Dunbar Magnet Middle and held mini-press conferences to celebrate Kick Butts Day and Arkansas Tobacco Free Kids Day. We presented to over 1185 youth and 75 faculty and staff at both schools. Big Shout outs to Mr. Reginald Merritt representing Dr. Suggs and the Little Rock School District, Dr. Mc Carroll and the Bale Elementary Staff, and Ms. Thrasher and the Dunbar Middle Staff for welcoming the Arkansas Youth Leadership and the YES Team and allowing us to make this the biggest EVER Arkansas Tobacco Free Kids Day!
All of you have just BLOWN our minds and we look forward to an even bigger Arkansas Tobacco Free Kids Day movement NEXT YEAR 2015.
The weather was cool, but the sun was bright and made for a great spotlight on this years' DUAL Arkansas theme of "Airing out big tobacco's dirty laundry--AGAIN" and the "Youth advocates MAKE THE DIFFERENCE in the state of Arkansas.
Arkansas Youth Leadership Initiative Tobacco Control Youth Board leaders hosted the event and served on the program. They presented their 2014 YES on the Hill Recommendations, and once again, put on BLAST big tobacco's dirty laundry. No longer is it a secret that Big Tobacco Targets Kids--by their own words,"youth are replacement smokers."
Not only were are youth leaders on board and our YES Team member across the state represented, this year we had two very special guests Senator Joyce Elliott and Ms. Katherine Donald who both spoke on the importance of youth advocates in Arkansas and their influence and impact as it relates to education and policy change.
Youth from across the state brought signs, with facts and quotes and placed them on display to show the manipulative practices of big tobacco in their pursuit of the "New YOUTH Market" to which they claim they don't TARGET. A total of 145 people registered for the event with just over 100 people in attendance...meeting our goal for the event.
We would also like to thank our Tobacco Control Youth Board leaders who worked Kick Butts Day/Arkansas Tobacco Free Kids Day events in their local communities and made sure that ARKANSAS youth advocates were on the MAP to support our National partners with KICK BUTTS DAY! Yoo Hoo! We so appreciate you all!!!!!
We look forward to seeing you and your friends next year.

The power of youth
Advocate for policy change: Young people are effective at garnering support for policy development and change. Youth capture the attention of political leaders and the media in ways that adults can’t.
Project a powerful voice: Youth have credibility with their peers and other community leaders.
Expose tobacco industry tactics: Youth are effective partners in the fight against the tobacco industry by exposing manipulative tactics and the latest gimmicks to try to bring in more youth tobacco users.
Invoke creativity and innovation: Young people naturally provide innovation and creativity, making this work more exciting and attractive to policy makers, partners, and other youth.
