Almost every product has a list of ingredients somewhere on the label. So isn't it strange that there isn't a list of ingredients on a pack of cigarettes? Isn't it outrageous that tobacco companies can market these products to children or lie to the public about how harmful they are?
Big Tobacco gets away with these harmful practices because tobacco products are exempt from basic health regulations that apply to other products, such as food, drugs and even dog food.
Now legislation has been introduced in Congress to end this special protection for Big Tobacco and give the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) authority to regulate tobacco products. Among other things, the FDA would have authority to:
Crack down on tobacco marketing and sales to kids.
Require tobacco companies to disclose the contents of tobacco products and remove harmful ingredients.
Stop tobacco companies from misleading the public about the health risks of their products.
