We are the Tobacco Control Youth Board--and our counter-marketing campaign is calledthe Y.E.S. TEAM. Read on for more information.
Y.E.S is a Youth-Led Movement composed of youth across the state of Arkansas and beyond with thehopes of reducing and ultimately eliminating the use of Tobacco by their peers. Are YOU a mover, shaker or troublemaker? If so, we WANT YOU to be on our team!
1. What is the Tobacco Control Youth Board (TCYB)?
The Tobacco Control Youth Board (TCYB) is a group of teens
dedicated to educating peers, middle and elementary school children, and
other members of the community, about the dangers of tobacco use and to fight big tobacco.
2. What does "Y.E.S." mean?
Y.E.S. means Youth Extinguishing Smoking.
3. Can you explain what "lies" big tobacco is spreading?
Big tobacco companies show ads that make smoking look cool, but the truth is, it kills. Tobacco companies say they don't target teenagers, yet they advertise heavily in magazines that have large teen audiences, such as Rolling Stone and Sports Illustrated. Did you know that 7,800 teens under age 18 become new daily smokers and in their memos, one of the tobacco companies called teens "replacement smokers." Replacements for the customers that die.
4. How can a teenage group fight Big Tobacco, a billion dollar industry?
One thing we know about Big Tobacco - all too often their methods work. Like Big Tobacco, The TCYB and Y.E.S. Team uses ads and public service announcements to communicate its anti-smoking messages. The movement also uses another powerful tool -peer-to-peer or word of mouth campaigns. The Tobacco Control Youth Board members speak at events throughout the state to declare that Y.E.S. they will Live, Work, Play Tobacco Free.
5. How does the Y.E.S. Team work?
The Y.E.S. Team is a statewide youth-led anti-tobacco movement organized by the Tobacco Control Youth Board with statewide teams, including schools, community groups and anti-tobacco coalitions. Each team works with the state program coordinator to develop activities and helps locate resources to carry out the group's plans.
For instance, TCYB members may want to stage a rally to get out their message. Or, they might want to work with the town government to pass a law to ban smoking in cars for kids seven and older, or cigarette ads that are below the counter in stores. At their meetings, they discuss ideas and make plans.
6. Some of my friends already smoke. Is there help for them?
While we do have some cessation information, we are a prevention and education program. If you are 16 and older, as of October 1, 2009, you can now call the Arkansas Quitline at 1-800 QUIT NOW! (1-800-784-8669). You may also find out more information by visiting www.stampoutsmoking.com.
