Who are we? We are youth leaders! We are Movers, Shakers, and Trouble Makers. We are the Tobacco Control Youth Board--and our counter-marketing campaign is called Y.E.S. TEAM. Read on for more information.

Youth-Led Movement composed of youth across the state of Arkansas and beyond with the
hopes of reducing and ultimately eliminating the use of Tobacco by their peers. Are YOU a mover, shaker or troublemaker? If so, we WANT YOU to be on our team!

1. What is the Tobacco Control Youth Board (TCYB)?

The Tobacco Control Youth Board (TCYB) is a group of  teens

dedicated to educating peers, middle and elementary school children, and

other members of the community, about the dangers of tobacco use. In 2003, they developed a counter-marketing campaign called Y.E.S.!

2. What does "Y.E.S." mean?

Y.E.S. means Youth Extinguishing Smoking.

3. Can you explain what "lies" big tobacco is spreading?

Big tobacco companies show ads that make smoking look cool, but the truth is, it kills. Tobacco companies say they don't target teenagers, yet they advertise heavily in magazines that have large teen audiences, such as Rolling Stone and Sports Illustrated.

4. Why do we need the Y.E.S. Team?

7,800 teens under age 18 become new daily smokers. In their memos, one of the tobacco companies called teens "replacement smokers." Replacements for the customers that die.

5. How can a teenage group fight Big Tobacco, a billion dollar industry?

One thing we know about Big Tobacco - all too often their methods work. Like Big Tobacco, The TCYB and Y.E.S. Team uses ads and public service announcements to communicate its anti-smoking messages. The movement also uses another powerful tool -peer-to-peer or word of mouth campaigns. The Tobacco Control Youth Board members speak at events throughout the state to declare that Y.E.S. - We Say No to Tobacco!

6. How does the Y.E.S. Team work?

The Y.E.S. Team is a statewide youth-led anti-tobacco movement organized by the Tobacco Control Youth Board with statewide teams, including schools, community groups and anti-tobacco coalitions. Each team works with the state program coordinator to develop activities and helps locate resources to carry out the group's plans.

For instance, TCYB
members may want to stage a rally to get out their message. Or they might want to work with the town government to pass a law to ban vending machines or cigarette ads that are below the counter in stores. At their meetings, they discuss ideas and make plans. Local teams can meet whenever they want to meet.

7. Some of my friends already smoke. Is there help for them?

Since no one method works for everyone, Arkansas has excellent free services to help people quit smoking. There is the Arkansas Department of Health has the SOS program- Stamp Out Smoking, call their Quitline at 1-866-NOW QUIT (669-7848).

8. How can I join Y.E.S. TEAM?

It's easy. If you agree to be TOBACCO FREE, then you can join the Y.E.S. Team. In fact, the only responsibility you have as a Y.E.S. Team member is to be TOBACCO FREE!  How cool! Just CLICK HERE TO EMAIL THE FORM and we'll notify the state youth
coordinator. Our home office will receive your information and a welcome package of information and goodies will be mailed to
you.    We'll send you information by return email, as well.

We spotted the YES Van at... and Ms. Genine was there to capture it on film...
YES Team News:
OCTOBER 21, 2008

Onlookers rallied in excitement at the Little Rock & Kick Coalition Red Ribbon Rally held at the Riverfront Amphitheatre.  Over 500 youth laughed and cheered as Master of Ceremony Craig O'Neil joked and recanted historical facts about schools in Little Rock and the famous Red Ribbon Event.   It was beautiful weather for the well anticipated event.  Not since the 2005 Red Ribbon Rally at the Alltel arena, held by former Arkansans for Drug Free Youth, have that many Little Rock youth converged on one place.  We, the members of the Tobacco Control Youth Board and YES Team, were excited to be included and look forward to many more years of participation in Kick Coalition events, especially the Red Ribbon Rally.

YES Team News:
October 16, 2008
What do you do with over 800 5th and 6th graders on a rainy day? YOU HAVE A STOMP OUT!  Yes, the STOMP OUT returned for a winning second year at Henderson State University.  Organizers of the event, made sure all the attendees were engaged and ready for workshops and presentations.  The opening march to the "Boxing Ring of HEALTH" was no match for the folks dressed in cigarette and snuff can costumes.  Once into the ring, it was over for the deadly products, because a young man, willing to fight the problem of youth access to tobacco, was in the boxing ring waiting for the chance to KNOCK  & STOMP tobacco OUT!  Yeah for him!  Immediately after the opening it was off to action packed workshops for some and lunch for others. During the BLUE lunch Ms. Genine and El Dorado Pride Members rallied outside while the rain was at bay, with kids from Umpire, Nashville, and Dierks.  Be sure to check out the cool pictures of the amazing trip. Oh, and guess who showed up for the festivities.  No need to guess any further.  It was Mr. Justin Lookadoo, with his crazy self!

YES Team News: SPECIAL REPORT
While at the Southwest Arkansas STOMP OUT, Ms. Genine had a huge surprise-6 footer plus, Josh Harris, one of the ORIGINAL Tobacco Control Youth Board Members and creators of the Y.E.S. (Youth Extinguishing Smoking) Team!  He was also a member of the Jefferson County Tobacco Advisory Board.  WOW! It was great to see him.  Josh is a Sophomore at Henderson State University in Arkadelphia.  He said, "When I saw the Y.E.S. van, I knew, Ms. Perez was some where nearby.  I just had to find her and say hello."  Well, Josh did and it made her day!  Way to go Josh! We are so proud of you.
